Oil for the XL600RWith your inquiry about which oil is "right" for the 40-year-old XL600R PD03, you could cause a small(?) religious war.
The
most important thing for the right oil of the XL600R is that it meets the
specifications of the manufacturer HONDA, with all its consequences!
(HONDA MANUAL Page 2-1)
API SERVICE CLASSIFICATION:SE or SFThis means that even the cheapest modern 4T oils of today are several classes better than the oils offered back then (1983)!
E.G.: API
SG is one or two classes higher or better!
The
oils for motorcycles with their clutches IN an oil bath should therefore (!) meet a
special standard (JASO).
If your oils meet this additional standard, then you are on the safe side! For example:

Depending on how
risk-averse you are, you can also try
normal car oils! These are
semi-synthetic engine oils! However, you have to be aware that you may have to give your bike a new clutch!
I have already done it successfully several times
without getting a slipping clutch, and thus saved a lot of money.
(One can do it like me, but you don't have to.) As far as I know, there are hardly any
purely mineral engine oils left!
All "SAE XW-Y" are not purely mineral engine oils, to get the wide temperature range!
Only the
pure single-grade oils, which are 100% mineral, remain.
